1: Forthcoming game you’re most looking forward to
Project:Dark. I backed this Kickstarter and have since played it a couple times with the creator. It is amazing because it gives us a new core conceit to play with (characters are assumed to be stealthy rather than combative), because the the rules & setting(s) richly intertwine, and because the players get to use poker cards!
2: Kickstarted game you’re most pleased you’ve backed.
Fate. I’ve backed a lot of games on Kickstarter. Leaving out play-aids such as cards, dice, etc., here they are in reverse order of backing: Microscope Explorer, Undying, Perilous Journeys, Deluxe V20 Lore of the Clans, Blades in the Dark, Deluxe Wraith: the Oblivion 20th Anniversary Edition, Vow of Honor, Deluxe V20 Dark Ages, Galactic Baroque RPG Universe Generator (Instant Universe), Urban Shadows, Lusus Naturae, Project: Dark, An Illustrated Bestiary of Fantastic Creatures, OmegaZone Instant Setting for Fate Accelerated, Chronos LARP, Covetous Poet’s Adventure Creator and Solo Guidebook, Kingdom, Inverse World, Transhuman, Fate Core, Hillfolk: Dramasystem, Exploding Aces, Numenera, Children of the Revolution Deluxe for Vampire 20th, Curse the Darkness, and Bhaloidam.
Of those that are already published and distributed, Fate has been the most impactful and most-utilized.
3: Favourite New Game of the last 12 months
??? I don’t really know what has been released in the past 12 months. Anybody have a list?
4: Most Surprising Game
Trash Planet. I played this at GenCon, wasn’t sure what to expect, and had tons of fun. The rules are really light, but not in the “we only tell stories and it’s not actual a game" way. They still facilitated the game and forced us into decisions and sacrifices.
5: Most recent RPG purchase
Torchbearer is my last complete-game purchase. I am assuming we are not counting Patreons (you can see my patronage here). My most recent game purchases were all things I got at GenCon. In addition to Torchbearer I also nabbed an Iron Kingdoms expansion book: Skorne Empire.
6: Most recent RPG played
Dungeon World. I have run & played a lot of one-shots with this game, and had tons of fun. I am looking forward to see how it holds up in the longer game. The aforementioned Perilous Journeys may help on that angle.
7: Favourite Free RPG
Dominion Rules. I really appreciated the open nature of this game, the unique differences between arcane and divine powers, and the interesting takes on weapons. Other free games that I have a strong interest in, but have not played, include Risus and Freeform/Universal RPG. If you count commercial products that also publish free or pay-what-you-want digital products, I can’t neglect to mention Eclipse Phase or Fate.
8: Favourite appearance of RPGs in the Media
Community’s Advanced Dungeons and Dragons and Advanced Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. Hilarious. If you are not familiar with the show, start at the beginning so you can get to know the characters. It’s a hilarious comedy, but it is really about the people.
9: Favourite media you wish was an RPG
Elder Scrolls. This is an amazing series. I have spent way too many hours playing these games, and the culture and history is rich. It would be easy enough to run with Fate, so maybe sometime I will play in this world with my friends.
10: Favourite RPG Publisher
Posthuman Studios. The folks there are ahead of the times when it comes to intellectual property and games (you can get any of their stuff digitally for free, but they also make gorgeous books and materials). Their Eclipse Phase series is a brilliantly-done setting, and engages a lot of interesting idea space. Rob Boyle and Adam Jury are both really fun to engage with at conventions, etc., as well.
