RPGaDay2018: Describe how your play has evolved

Posted on August 13th, 2018

I used to play primarily to see how play changed the characters. This started out with the simple see how badass they can get” metric. Later, it became much more nuanced, including preferring games that support something other than an ever-upward character arc. (Unfortunately, most RPGs don’t effectively support that type of play.)

Now, I play much more for emergent creation. I like seeing how the different voices continually contribute to history, setting, and characters. (Unfortunately again, most RPGs only effectively support this at the beginning of the game/campaign, if at all.)

RPGaDay2018: What gives a game staying power?

  1. Some fiddly bits for the players to continue to toy with and explore
  2. Short prep times for the GM
  3. Player-contributions to the ongoing campaign (e.g.: recaps, new content, mapping, etc.)
  4. Character actions have an impact on the setting
